Series

The series. I didn't see the film until long after the series was on the air. So maybe I had a different expectation when I saw it. But the comic timing of the actors was better in the series. And I like the way it evolved. I think if I saw the film first I would have wondered why they were making a tv show. But I'm glad they did!

Robert Altman gave the film a very sharp, realistic edge that television of the time couldn't possibly show. Remember that the series went on air as, much like now, the country was wrestling with the horrific results of the continuing war in Viet Nam.

But the series constantly pushed at the limits of a censorious television hierarchy...and did damned well.

The film was brilliant but then so is the series. Alan Alda was fantastic as Hawkeye. The rest were not far behind! Radar!! Kilinger! Trapper! Frank! Hot Lips! and the rest, my two teenage sons love the series.

Ugh. The film by far. The series was far too safe, far too slapstick (an example of crude physical comedy and cheap one-liners over intelligent satire), not even remotely close to being as well-written, and the overly-liberal (and in some cases, just plain silly) portrayal of many of the characters went against the spirit of the film and the book.

I liked the characters of the series better....I usually don't go for a series over a movie. For some reason something was missing in the movie....I can't put my finger on it....I know the movie was first...I saw the movie first, but the movie just didn't have "it" together.....

I liked both. I really liked Alan Alda as Haweye. But I also liked Donald Sutherland. I guess i'd have to say the series because they could develope the characters more in it than in the movie.
