Your cover letter should be an introduction of yourself to the company, first identifying the position your are seeking and where you heard of it. Then how your experience meets the needs listed in the advert. It should not be a rehash of your resume as suggested, just how the resume suits what they're looking for.

You cover letter should be a basic introduction, short and to the point. State which job you are applying for and state that your resume/vita is attached.

Then give contact phone number(s) and times as well as sign it.

your cover letter should answer the question 'what can you do for our company' it should be addressed to the head of the dept, the head of HR, or the head of the company, by name. it should show that you have researched the company and know what they need from the best person for the job. it should never say what YOU want or need, only what you can do for the company.
