I believe you that you looked at your iPod to see the model, but even the Apple site says: iPod shuffle is smaller than iPod mini and has no display. There are LED lights on the front and back. The capacity of the drive is engraved on the front USB connector. --- So I don't know any other way by looking at it.

However! another way to check... you need to get iTunes first. You can get it for free. It's good at finding music files in your computer and it's easy to use.

Hopefully the progam will tell you, but if not, go this way. So you either have a 512MB (about 120 songs) or a 1GB (about 240 songs). Nice that there are only 2 choices! The capacity isn't exactly accurate because after formating 512MB does not really equal 512MB of space for you to use.

Now this is how you will narrow it down. When you create a playlist for your shuffle you have to make sure you have enough room to hold the whole thing. If you have a 512MB and try to put on say 600MB it won't work. It doesn't do just part of it. Kind of all or nothing.

So try about 700MB worth to start, if it holds it... you will know because you will be able to play stuff back, you have a 1GB. If you can't, try closer to 450MB and see if it works. If that works instead, it looks like a 512MB.

The only other variables really could be if your friend did anything, and the memory is being taken up and stuff. I hope you figure it out okay. If not the discussions on Apple's website can be very helpful. Much like here at Yahoo! just specific to Apple stuff.

on the metal usb plug, it says one gigabyte or 512 mb, if that doesn't help, there is a tiny reg. number on the back side, bottom. really there are only two versions, so how long could you possibly wonder?

download itunes for free, or yamipod. you need one of them, you can't just drag and drop with the shuffle

On itunes when you open up your ipod folder it should tell you on the bottom how much memory you used and how much you have free.
