Ok... Everyone says you can't do it... but guess what?!? THEY ARE WRONG!

There's a 90% chance that you certainly CAN DO IT!

Windows XP automatically creates a user account on your computer called "administrator". However, when you start up windows, it doesn't show up on the list of users. So here's what you do.

Shut your computer off. Then you turn it back on. While it is booting up, you keep tapping the F8 button.

That will eventually bring up a menu (don't worry if your computer starts beeping at you every time you push the F8 button... that is normal.)

On that menu that comes up, you will choose to start the computer in "Safe Mode". (use the arrow keys on the keypboard and choose Safe Mode, then hit enter.)

If another menu pops up, hit enter again... and let windows start booting into safe mode.

Eventually, a list of users will come up. Click on "administrator".

When you get all booted up into the "adminstrator" account, simply go to the control panel, double click on "users", find your dad's account and click on it.

Then choose to change the password.

You can change his password to anything you want on the next screen WITHOUT knowing his old password... Remember, you are now in the hidden "administrator" account that has the power to do this.

You can change the password to anything you want... you should actually be able to set it to nothing also if that's what you want to do.

Once you have the new password changed and saved, shut down your computer again.

Now start it back up and you'll be able to get in your dad's account with no problem.

There is only ONE problem with the method I just described to you (which is why it only works 90% of the time)...

When someone installs windows XP on your computer for the first time, they are usually asked to pick a password. This password gets used for the hidden "administrator" account. If your computer had windows XP installed and someone chose a password on that screen, you will have to know what it is for this to work.

The good news is that 90% of the time people just hit enter and leave that password blank. It's a very common thing to do.

Anyway, you have a 90% chance this will work. Give it a shot.

If you just have a limited acct. you can not change it to admin. He will have to do it. Normally if only family members (not kids) use the puter, all have admin. privileges.
Unless it is HIS personal computer that he just lets you 'use', he should not have full control of it. Tough situation. Maybe mom should say "make it a family computer" or get it out of the house.
He can have a password on his account would give him the same 'privacy".
