why hasn't evolution phased them out?

Antlers are what they use for weapons when they are fighting other males for the right to breed.

Because evolution only phases characteristics that are not being used. The deer use them for attracting a mate, protection against other male deer, and for marking their territory.

No, if anything, evolution has made them bigger and stronger. They're main purpose is for fighting for the privilege of mating. The other purpose is for defending the herd.

they show the female how strong the males are so they can select the best male for procreation. They also use them in battling the competing males for the females attention.

they fight each other with them, by locking horns in a pushing-match.

it's a sign of age, and survival. the females are attracted to the ones with bigger horns (no wonder they're not phased out.)
