Anthony Hopkins is better, but personaly I like Jack Nickholson more. How about Paul Newman? Johnny Depp is not far behind? Or Gary Oldman? Or Sean Penn?

Sir Lawrence Olivier, without a doubt. Anthony Hopkins can't act. He's just a character actor in all his films, with just a change in the script and his age. Nicholson's pretty much the same. Another fantastic actor, and, ironically, acted in a very famous film with Sir Lawrence Olivier, is Dustin Hoffman, and in that movie alone, both of those actors did a superb job, and should have both received Oscars for their performances. Dustin Hoffman also starred in such fantastic shows as "Papillion", and "Hero", among others that I'll remember AFTER I submit this answer. Sir Lawrence Olivier has been in many major films, but I haven't seen one of his movies in a while so I can't remember them "on the spur of the moment". Look him up on Google, and you'll see how fantastic he is. There are VERY FEW, if even an EXTREME MINORITY of people who like to call themselves actors that can perform to the level of those two. God Bless you.

Marlon Brando, followed by Robert Deniro, Klaus Kenski, Philllip Seymour Hoffman and Al Pacino.

However, the greatest performance in the history of cinema easily belongs to Maria Falconetti, who played Joan in The Passion of Joan of Arc, her only film role (she was a stage actor).
