It's not an americanism. It usually means laughing out loud but can also mean lots of love.

LOL was originally used in England at the bottom of letters and the very early e-mails standing for "Lots Of Love"

It was then corrupted (^.^) and manipulated to mean "Laughing Out Loud" and thus it is used that way today until someone changes it to "Licking Old Ladies?"

Laugh Out Loud, for when something's funny, and it's not just Americans that put that in, I do too and I'm British.

when ever someone types something funny we put lol or when we are saying goodbye or something sentimental. why? b/c (because) we don't want to type out 'laugh out loud' or lots of love. it is just a short way of saying 'i'm laughing right now' or 'goodbye' or 'I love you'. Anyone in the world can use it, not just Americans. Understand?

Lol stands for Laugh out loud. It is used especially when something written may be taken as otherwise offensive. Like when you are saying something 'tongue in cheek'.

It helps the reader realise that you are joking.
