This question is full of preconceived ideas. I'm pierced, but it's not about thrills. I'm tattooed, but I don't look upon it as graffitti. And I haven't yet found a crowd I really want to blend in to.
I don't think we have to make excuses for why we do these things, because it's not a bad thing to do. Even if we look at it on a very basic level - tattoos and piercings (and brandings, and scarification) look good. To those people who think those things look good.
And to those who don't, they don't. Why is the person who asked this question so bothered?
I've been trying to keep this quite sensible and straight-laced, but I've gotta say... "They are piercing almost every part of the human body, including the tongue! What kind of a thrill does that bring"... - don't ask someone who's got their tongue pierced...ask their partner.

You do realize that piercings tattooes are generally in the minority, right? Not everybody has them, and since there's pretty much endless possibilities within these categories, it's sticking out, not blending in. A lot of people don't do these things for the right reasons, sure. And you know what? They regret it later. But the great thing about human nature is that there doesn't have to be any rationalization for getting pierced or tattooed. A lot do it simply because they want to.
And besides, do you feel the same way about clothes, or jewelry? It's the same concept, adorning the body.
And you're making a criminal judgment of ink. Graffiti? Sometimes, but I can show you plenty of ink that can only be qualified as art, just that the canvas is skin.
Overall you're very conservative and unfeeling in your perspective. Try and actually get a view of the big picture, as opposed to just recognizing something on a base level and judging/denouncing it before you actually know anything about it.

I say do something more private like your nipples, unless you want to be different then your very private area. Just keep in mind whatever body piercing you decide on, if it is visible then you get many different reactions from people. Also think about what type of job you end up with. Some workplaces look down on any kind of visible piercing beyond the simple pierced ear.

Well lemmee tell ya something there, z, tattooing and body piercing aren't all about "fitting in with the crowd". Body modification and body art have been around for thousands of years, even pre-dating the modern bible. As far as "female emergence", it's a fair theory, but it's unfortunately incorrect. The modern re-emergence of body art (tattoos and piercings) has swept the planet because society as a whole has no rites of passage for the youth of today. Back in the day (2-6000 years ago) when a young man or woman came of age, a special rite or ceremony was held in which the youth was marked, scarred, pierced or otherwise initiated into adulthood (something you're probably not familiar with). Modern day piercing and tattooing have come around again as a product of our confused, social undercurrent because the initiation into adulthood has turned into "daddy and mommy buying me a new car!" as opposed to something meaningful and memorable. Sure, some people will get tatted up and pierced all to hell because it seems to be the thing to do at the time, only to regret it later...Guess what?...They weren't ready for adulthood and will probably make crappy parents if they decide to breed.
Don't be so jugemental, man. Here's a statistic for you to research if you want to find out where piercing and tattooing stand in our present American society- 85% of all Americans ages 18 and up have atleast one piercing and one tattoo...Chew on that!
If you really wanna' get freaked out, check out www.bmezine.com, but be warned...It's not for the faint of heart or small of mind!!!
And just so you know, I've been a professional piercer for over 15 years. I've had over 200 piercings just to see what they felt like so I could relate to my customers and over 35% of my entire body is tattooed, including my face. I hold two degrees in analytical psychology, a degree in business management and and a degree in philosophy.
Our entire WORLD is on the brink of a massive and earth-shattering change; tattooing and body piercing are expressions of the world to come...Now don't run out and get tatted up (that is unless you think you're ready for something that serious), but prctice a little understanding. Infact, I can almost guarentee you have people in your own family that have piercings and tattoos (you may not be able to see 'em, though!).
love, peace and chicken grease.

I guess the thrill of getting pierced or tattoed relies on the thought that doing so will bring an extra sense of uniqueness or relevance in society. Of course, that works if you care about what other people think about your appearance, which is the case with the vast majority of people who do this. Of course, there are people who appreciate an "artistic value" these may have, but that's not alway the case.
Anyway, people's bodies are their kingdom and, in this case, their canvas, so what right do we really have for bashing them about it? If what they are doing has consequences or anything like that, that's their sole responsability.

Everyone has their own personal reasons for liking Body Art. Sometimes tattoos are a respresentation of something that they could have gone through, or simply something they like. Piercings can actually look really nice depending on where they are. They don't suit everyone you must understand.
By the way,
Just because you don't like Body Art, doesn't make you a "real guy."

It's not about fitting in the crowd but expressing themselves. most people in the past with tattoos and piercings didnt get hired so what 'crowd' you speak of? now, things are changing. more and more people are doing it. It's something that they love and they want to keep it on their own bodies to remember by. Or if someone wants to be a 'freak', he/she can be a freak.

It's a combination of art, expression, fads, and fashion.
Some people do it because they think it looks nice, which a lot of it does, but there's a limit.
Some people get tattooed and such because they want something to remember someone by, or something to remind them of the good time, etc., etc.
Some people do it just because other people are doing it and they want to fit in with the crowd.
And finally, some people do it because they see it as pretty, or a fashion statement.

I don't think it looks good or that it looks good. I hate body piercing, I only have 2 ear piercings in each ear and then 1 on my cartilage on my left ear, I think that's okay. Body piercings are gross, in my opinion.
