It would help if you told us a little about your interests, because your best bet is to read a book that is connected to a subject that you enjoy. Here are a few recommendations.
The Hot Zone by Richard Preston - this is a true story about the Ebola virus in Africa. It's a fast and easy read, and it will give you an idea of what life is like in Africa and some good information about biology and medicine if you're interested in them.
Sorcery and Cecelia by Patricia C Wrede and Carolyn Stevermer - This is a fantasy novel set during the Edwardian period (circa 1800) in England. It's got some interesting historical aspects, and is told in the form of letters written between two cousins - one is in London and the other is in the country. It's another fast and easy read and the characters are fun. It's got lots of humor and some romance, but it also has lots of historical details if you're interested in history.
Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi - Another true story. When she graduated from high school, the author didn't know what to do. She had never said before, but her father suggested she try to set the world record for the youngest person to sail around the world solo. This is the story of her attempt. It's got some interesting stories about foreign countries and sailing and learning about life.
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - science fiction about a future where earth is at war with aliens and young children are drafted to be in the military. It's got a lot of interesting characters and also presents issues about right vs wrong and the effects of war on the psyche. It's a great book.

Books I've read: The House of Night Series (Vampires) By: P.C. and Kristen Cast 1Marked 2Betrayed 3Chosen 4Untamed 5Hunted (just released March 10th) Summary: Zoey is your average popular highschooler, until she is chosen to become a vampire. Vampires start out as fledgings and go through the process until they reach fully grown vampires. Zoey doesn't want to be a vampire, the situation is taking her away from her friends and totally hot boyfriend. When she meets an even hotter fledging and some new friends, will she change her mind? Blindfold (Murder Mystery) By: Diane Hoh Twilight Saga (Vampires) By: Stephenie Meyer 1Twilight 2New Moon 3Eclipse 4Breaking Dawn Also she has The Host which is better than Twilight and it is about futuristic aliens who take over the world Vampire Academy By: Rachelle Mead The Uglies series By: Scott Westerfield 1Uglies 2Pretties 3Specials 4Extras (there is also a guid to this futuristic world) In our future as you turn 16 you get a surgery that improves your looks....but it also brainwashes you into thinking that is what you want to happen. Everyone is forced into the operation, except a select few who manage to escape to a runaway village. Wicked Lovely By:???? 1Wicked Lovely 2Ink Exchange I though it would be stupid because it is about faeries, but it is really good and action and romance packed. Tithe By:???? 1Tithe 2Valiant 3Ironside After I read Wicked lovely and realized the faeries weren't always so nice I found this series. There are a couple of really wierd parts, but in the end it's worth it. This series is really....different. Some non supernatural books are: Someone Like You and The truth About Forever _I reccommend you read the Truth About forever first it is much better. They are both by Sarah Dessen I HOPE I HELPED AND FYI IM AT A HIGHSCHOOL READING LEVEL BUT I GOT MOST OF THESE AT MY MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY SO YOU SHOULD BE GOOD NO MATTER WHAT! OH AND SORRY I DONT HAVE SOME OF THE AUTHORS BUT I DONT HAVE MY BOOKS WITH ME......

Here are some pretty long books I've enjoyed:
Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling (duh xD)
Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini (already said but very good books)
Inkheart and Inkspell by Cornelia Funke
Books I've read for class and enjoyed:
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
Night by Elie Wiesel
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
That's all I can remember for now. You can also just go to the library and search in the childrens and young adults sections. You can always find some good books there. Hope this helped! =)

Long and challenging don't necessarily mean "good"......try Jane Austen. She wrote uncomplicated stories (romantic mostly) that reflect her social status and the period, and she uses language beautifully. Bring your dictionary.
I like the suggestion of "Hitchhiker's Guide".....short, funny and thoroughly worth it, although not "heavy" or "serious".
I loved the "Chronicles of Narnia"....look for the religious connotations in the simple stories......Aslan = Jesus, etc.
I loved "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress". Easy read, with cultural relevance.
When I was 13 I read some Shakespeare.....Try the comedies...."Twelfth Night" is my fave.......Much Ado about Nothing, Taming of the Shrew are good too.

1984 by George Orwell is a book that pple in HS read in AP classes. so if u want to blow ur teacher away, read this. it isnt really that hard to get through and there is a lot of irony, metaphores and rhetorical devices used. the book makes you think. read it and you teacher will probably be rather impressed

Eragon by Christopher Paolini is an AMAZING book....it's really long but it's such a good story. Most of the words aren't difficult to read and the plot is really involving. I HIGHLY recommend it!! Good luck!!
