Many correct answers, but a simpler formula is to just multiply the hourly wage times 2, and then say "thousand" after it. So, you take 8 times 2 to get 16, and you say "16 thousand."

Your salary, based on a 40 hour work week, the formula is:
2080 X your wage. There are two thousand eighty work hours in a year.
You can also divide the annual salary by 2080 to get the hourly rate.
OK, some people are figuring in vacation time and stuff. I don't know where they get their numbers; 52 X 40 is 2080. Don't trust me? 52 X 4, or 52 + 52 + 52 + 52 is 208. Since I dropped the ZERO from the 40, lets put it back and make it 2080. Need more proof? 52 + 52 = 104. 104 + 104 is 208. Put back the zero and you are back at 2080. I don't know how in the heck someone figured 2000 hours, unless you get 2 weeks vacation to start with. Then it's probably paid, so you are back to an annual salary based on 52 weeks at 40 hours.
Why do people make this so complicated?
The guy below: that's a simple way of estimating annual wage, but try that with $20 per hour. Your formula says I make $40K annual, but actually it's $41,600. You'd loose 1600 bucks with your formula. And at $8 per hour, it's$16,640. That's more than 2 weeks take home pay lost. :(

$8 / hour @ 40 hours/week times 50 weeks = $16000
So, yes $40K is better than $8 an hour

We assume you are talking about $40k annual income. In that case it is extremely better since there are 2060 work hours a year, as accepted by the Department of Labor. Multiply that by $8.00 you get $16,480 a year.

Of course, $8 an hour is approx $16k a year.
8 * 40 hours = 320 * 50 weeks (minus 2 weeks vacation) = $16,000

well it depends on how many hours you plan on working in a year, 40 hr work week x $8 is $320 week = so about 1200 month x 12 = 14400/yr
