I design gothic clothing for a living and have been in the costume business since the moment I realized I had the talent for creating things. I've made spider costumes, knights, Aliens, pirates, princesses, bears, matadors, mermaids, you name it ....a lot of costumes. I have yet to create the most challenging costume ever, Any ideas.. ?

As one costumer to another - - - here goes, assuming that by Gothic you might be into horror - - - utilizing the 'walking illusions' available through Morris of North Carolina - - - A Screaming sobbing woman at the guillotine - - - for safety sake the guillotine couldn't be more than four feet above your head - - - the trick part is too pull your head back into 'the costume' while a fake severed head plops into the basket, then of course your own arms hands reach out and pull the blade back up and restore 'head,' your own head comes back into play. All could be rigged on a rectangular push cart and you would be kneeling all night but hey.
Here is an easy out for you - - - woman or man on the electric chair - - - complete with 'electrical' effects, another good excuse to sit & scream & sob all night - - - .
Effort is a qualitative word - - - a 16th Century Tudor Gown looks 'nice' but is easilly dismissed in this modern age yet every stitch is hand sewn, every ruff tucked & pleated, the man hours needed to even vaguely copy one of Elizabeth's Gowns can be easilly a hundred hours. Yet no one looking at one will give it more than a third place rating UNLESS the personality in the Costume is such that it is a wow. Personality triumphs over Costume design eighty percent of the time . Have a Spooktacular Halloween.

1920s belly dancer. I've seen some great goth belly dance costumes based on photographs from the early 20th century in America. There will be a lot of hand-sewing to put all of the pearls or jewels on the costume. Making veils that are sturdy is also a challenge. If you want to make a coin bra, take the extra step and punch your own coins! That take forever to do as well.

Otherwise, be a winged Egyptian Goddess. Making the wings will keep you very busy.

I've always liked Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She was goth before goth ever started. (her TV show in LA goes back to the mid-70s) Her trademark gown is still her identifying feature.

Here's her site. Be sure to go to the Halloween page.
