My girlfriend is Puerto Rican and she says that they are all Latinos, but only people born in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba can be called Hispanics. Mexicans, South Americans, and Central Americans are Latinos simply because they live in Latin America. People in Spain are not considered Latinos cause they are not Latin Americans. They can be considered Hispanics because that is where the term came from anyway.

The proper term is Latino which is the newer version of Hispanic.
The lame term Mexican has been far gone then came Hispanic and now Latino.

This is what i was told by a Latino anyway because i was wondering the same thing. And i don't want to disrespect anyone!

Good question

this is one of the great contradictions of ethnicity in america. hispanic come from spanish, which means you come from a spanish speaking country. latino comes from latin, which means you come from countries where they speak a language which was derived from latin (spanish, italian, portuguese, etc). and besides this two gruops can have divisions in white and black. So you could have someone from mexico, who could be black or white. People from brazil, almost all the times considered hispanic by non-spanish speaking people, do not consider themselves hispanic (they speak portuguese in brazil), italians consider themselves latinos, but in America latinos are most of the times people who come from latinamerica (including brazil). so we could have black and white hispanic, black and white latinamericans, and latinos in general (italy and portugal, included). Now you may ask, what about French, since french comes from latin, do they consider themselves latinos? the answer is no, they do not consider themselves latin people. and for the record, these group do not call themselves latinos or hispanics, it is the stablishment which does.

by using fact we share the Spanish language and the historic past or Spanish colonization. Quiet attempting to stir issues up. i'm Mexican and Nicaraguan... So i'm ethnically Latino. The Latino subculture facilitates us to be closer to one yet another. Anglo subculture merely separates a and dilutes all human beings till they be attentive to no longer something approximately their ancestry.
