The whole transmission would have to be replaced. Parts and labor, in the vicinity of 3-4 thousand dollars easily as a conservative figure.

You will need a new bell housing, transmission, tranny mounts, drive line and a ton of assorted other parts. The older the car, the easier it will be. Anything before about 1980 should be fairly simple, about $1000 in parts.
