In a nutshell...? It's all about the money and popularity.

1. Hero has been around for MANY years.

2. Hero's popularity starts to decline. So does the money.

3. Comic "kills" Hero. Fans buy ridiculous amount of copies.

4. Time passes. Nostalgia sets in. Interest in Hero rekindled.

5. Bring back Hero. Fans buy ridiculous amount of copies

6. New adventures for Hero.

7. Fans happy and interested again.

8. Money flow increases.

9. "Cash Cow" starts giving "milk" again

10. Comic industry suckles at cow's teat until it runs dry again.**

More comic book characters that have remained dead:

Ferro Lad (LSH, reboots don't count)
Karate Kid (see above)
Leviathon (ditto)
Chemical King (um... I'm seeing a pattern here)
Deadman (c'mon, argue that one!)

By the way, Superboy has already returned from the "dead". He died in LSH V3 #38. Anytime they bring another character back from the dead, it makes me a little bit sadder. It seems to be their way of saying "Hey, remember that kidney punch we gave you 5 years ago? Remember the gut wrenching horror / righteous anger you felt? How about the idea of saving the world with the ultimate price? Well... just kidding!" It’s enough to piss a guy off.

Everyone but Barry Allen (Flash) and Captain Marvel from the Marvel Universe have come back to life at some point in time.

Fans have a big say in who stays dead and who comes back to life but so do the creators because everyone wants a chance to write or draw there favorite characters so they create loopholes to bring heroes and villains back from the great beyond.

They Do sometimes. Don't you remember The Supergirl from the cover of action comics Dead in Superman's arms. She stayed dead and they replaced with her that annoying Teenage supergirl. one of the worst things they ever did in my opinion because the older one was alot Hotter!!!!

because the authors don't have much creativity and memory so they need to use the same characters over and over. Plus the readers would forget the characters easily if new ones keep coming.

I rather don't know, but it's the same on t.v cartoons, why does Wily Coyote not die on roadrunner. And Daffy duck when he gets blown to bits.

Because they (the companies) can still make more money off of them if they bring em back to life.

Because the readers don't like it if their fave character gets killed off.

that's the trouble with cartoons... there's too much violence..try if you can to name one cartoon without any violence in it...there aren't many...no wonder our children think it's OK to murder someone...cartoons are desensitizing children... a 10-year-old boy was asked after he accidentally shot his friend. if he thought it was wrong he just killed a human being..the child said..don't worry he'll be back next season.
