The first automobile produced with an internal combustion engine was built by german inventor Karl Benz in 1885 and patented in 1886. It was followed shortly after by fellow germans Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1886 who built an automobile out of a converted stagecoach. An American named George Baldwin Selden supposedly designed an automobile powered by an internal combustion engine in 1877 but he didn't build it until he was forced to in 1905 in order to fulfill his patent and to stave off an impending lawsuit as to the legality of the patent.

actually, the first modern car is counted the one by the german Carl Benz, with the first significant drive in 1892, by his wife, without any help, proving that it was a practical way of travelling, and not only a freak machine to be operated by trained engineers...

automobiles as such have been around longer, the oldest example i can recall is a steamdriven contraption build by a frenchman at the end of the 18th century, well before even steam engines became frequent. but being french, it never really drove, and after exploding together with its designer, became quite unpopular. :)

In 1769, the very first self-propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot (1725 - 1804).

Cugnot used a steam engine to power his vehicle, built under his instructions at the Paris Arsenal by mechanic Brezin.
