Usuallly a gynecologist will insert a metal device to slightly open your vagina. They then use a tool that looks just like a plastic stick to get cells from inside you. Then, they insert a stick that looks like a long Q-tip into the opening of your cervix, causing a minor contraction, to gather cells there.
Yes, this can be done on a virgin

Basically during a pap smear they will instert this thing and then swab your cervix. It will not hurt, but could just be uncomfortable. More of the discomfort is from just being emberessed. No matter how many times I go, I still get nervous. More than likely they will do a breast exam too. It won't take long. Usually a gynecologist will do it or you can go to the health department. I don't believe this would be something that a pediatrican would do. Good luck and dont' stress about it. Yes a virgin could get one, but usually this is done once you become sexually active. Don't really understand why this would be needed for a physical for school. I had physicals in school for cheerleading but they didn't do a pap smear. My first pap smear was when I was 16, only because I was sexually active and wanted to get on birth control.

I don't know of any pediatricians who do pap smears... that is usually an ob-gyn or internist's job. I've never jeard of it being required for basketball, though.
Yes, a virgin can have a pap smear. What defines you as a virgin is that you have never had vaginal intercouse. The whole "presence of a hymen" thing is a bit outdated.
What happens... ugh, this is going to sound worse than it really it. Pretty much you are lying on your back, the doctor inserts a "seperator" into your vagina to keep things open, and then s/he uses a "collector" to scrape a tissue sample from your cervix. It doesn't (shouldn't) hurt - just pressure. The more you can get yourself to relax, the easier it is. Not fun, but hey, welcome to womanhood.

I will answer the pediatrician part. I have worked in pediatrics and we have had very young girls who were on birth control pills have a pap smear. The women pediatricians did them and they were very quick and the young girl and doctor would come out laughing afterwards. The youngest I have seen would be on a 13 year old girl.
The instruments we had were very small and they were warmed up before the doctor used them so they weren't so cold!!
One more thing, when you call to make your appointment with your doctor, let the girl know when she schedules this appointment that you will need a pap. That way she will allow more time for your appointment.

It can be embarrassing at your age, understandably so. Yes, a virgin can have one - what they're looking for has nothing do with whether or not you're a virgin. There will be a woman present besides the doctor - and any physician can do a pap smear. You will be laid on your back with your pants off and your feet in obstetric stirrups. The doctor will open your vagina with a tool called a speculum and will take a scraping from your cervix with a small sterile wooden paddle. That's all there is to it; it is not painful at all. In fact, a Nurse Practitioner can do it in his or her office. Don't sweat it and everything will be fine, okay?

A pap smear is where your doctor scrapes some cells from your cervix to check for cancer. It can be uncomfortable but not painful. Yes, a virgin can have one. Your pediatrician might do it, but you may have to go to either a family doctor or an obgyn.

Children usually dont get Pap smears and I have never heard of it being required for basketball ever the pap smear is to check for gynecological abnormalities like STDS, Cervical Cancer and is not generally started untill age 25-30 and then at 5 yr intervals untill 45-50 then yearly after that and that is usually done by either your primary care dr or an Ob Gyn exception is in cases of rape sexual battery, incest or molestation cases have you talked this unusual request over with your parents please do thanks Gorbalizer

first of all its a gynegologist that will do it they put you on examine table, feet in stirrups, legs spread the doctor get this long q-tip type stick stick in your vagina scraps some cells from cervix. sometime you can't feel it. It take like 4 seconds its over. But then they want to stick their fingers in you and check ovaries too. Goodluck once you have them over and over again it gets easier. Yes virgins can have them.
