While filming for a show, he was stung by Sting Ray in the chest. At the time, he was snorkling in the Great Barrier Reef. The poison from the sting ray killed him before they were even able to get him to a hospital. Because they were filming for a documentary, the whole thing was caught on video. I'm not sure if they released it to the public yet.

The famous aussie 'croc hunter' Steve Irwin was struck in the chest by a Stingray while shooting for a documentary in the Great Barrier Reef, off the Australian Coast, last week.

He was filming a documentary on Australias northern coast when, tragically, he swam over a giant sting ray. Startled, the sting ray reacted, and piereced Irwins Heart. Despite strugling for several minutes to remove the barb, he passed out, and bought aboard his boat, Croc One. Crews failed to revive him, and he died of his injuries.
What a tragedy he was a great, great man!

what ahppened to steve irwin is that he got shot by a sting ray when filming a docmentary and when he pulled out the sting ray he had a heart attack

he died...the third person in the world to die by sting ray sting. he was stung in the heart.
those poor aussies...he was a pretty awesome national icon.

a stingray with a ten inch barb went into his heart and he pulled it out... he would have lived if he wouldn't have pulled it out... but he didn't die instantly . he went unconcious and never woke up :(
