I think it's a cultural thing going back to the Industrial Revolution in England.

Pubic hair holds sweat which contains sex hormones. Particularly with females, shaving, using soap and deodorants, decreases the body's sweat and male attracting pheromones.

In order that the wheels of industry continued in the interests of maximising profit, adopting this practice ensured workers were less likely to get distracted by sexual licentiousness on the job and thus concentrate on making more profit for capital. The saying "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" supported this view.

Later, a whole new and profitable industry grew out of "cleanliness". Today, we simply accept this practice as the norm.

You're being too culturally specific. In much of the world, underarm hair on woman is common and liked:
"When I went to Europe, I had to remind myself to close my mouth and not stare whenever I saw women raise their arms and see hair. Lots of hair. Grown freely. Wearing sleeveless shirts.
I cannot seem to find the real background WHY our society “demands” shaved armpits for women. And WHY most European (and Chinese, I found via google) women do not see the need to rid their underarm of hair."

Why mostly women answer the question that should be answered by men?

Where did you hear that they don't like it? I am sure a lot of them do / or have nothing against it. Am I right?

Actually, I don't really have an opinion on underarm hair, unless it's like steel wool!

Women have more important aspects.

its more of a cultural thing. It big in Germany, and when Julia Roberts went without shaving she got slated!

Personally, I don't like it and thing its a sign of lazyness - again a cultural thing. Don't worry though because its becoming fashionable for men to shave armpits and pubic hair. - Though I think the function of pubic hair is cover up the fact the our tackle is so damn ugly - looks much like a plucked chicken

I am a woman and I think under arm hair looks terrible, what is the point of wearing a pretty short sleeved top and having long sweaty dark hairs protruding, how unfeminine , yuck !!!

It's because of what society believes to be correct. Society believes that women should not have hair in their armpits. Thus, most guys think it is bad. However, there are some countries out there that don't believe it is bad. Thus, their societies think that it is alright for women to have hair there.

yes Guitar i think it always looks unfeminine and its always been the habit for women to dispose of underarm hair so we have lived over the years to accept it as norm, !! no other reason

In Western society women are 'supposed' to look pubescent and sterile.

That's why we shave our legs and armpits and are terrified of getting fat on our hips like women naturally do when they are fully grown adults.

Screwy isn't it.
