The other day I was in Karate, and my friend and I were doing Kumite(sparring) and my sensei gave me 20 push ups for wearing a wife-beater under my gi, and I shouldn't have asked why becasue he could have taken offense and called it disrespectful, but I did anyway and he said the rule was that only girls may wear a plain white T-shirt under their gi. Is this some traditional martial arts rule or something?

My son wears shirts under his gi all the time. His Sensei actually recommended it because he wasn't comfortable without one.

Oh Grasshopper! The easiest answer to this question is a simple; His house, his rules. It need not make any sense to you or anyone else. Karate is built on discipline and you only ask questions within the boundaries of his rules. Before you begin class, ask for a written list of rules. If he has non, find yourself another Sensei, because if he has no written rules, he is not a good teacher. (As I am sure you know, Sensei means teacher.)

grasshopper wrong idea just wash out a white t-shirt when you do laundry next time if you don't have one buy alot of them when you go to the clothing store for boys like footlocker buy your size if you don't know your siz ask the clothes salesman to measure you. i know from reading and practicing with my sister and that is a rule its a unwritten rule.
