The only fish really that live well without one are species that can tolerate 5g or smaller tanks (but even then it's not a bad idea).

Personally - I wouldn't keep fish without one, but it can be done (e.g. Betta tanks are sometimes are small as a gallon).

given a big enough tank no fish needs a filter.

But realistically almost all fish needs a filter in an aquarium. The only ones that can live without a filter are those who in nature lives in puddle or water environments that have stagnant or oxygen deprived waters. Some examples are goldfish, beta, and killi fish. Almost everything else needs some sort of filtration.

Filters remove waste from the tank, this includes fish excrement and uneaten food. It increases the time between each water change, so it is conveniant as well. They arent expenisive, you can get one for less than $20. Its not fair to you or your fish to not have one, even if its a betta. Don't do it. Save up and get the proper supplies before you get a fish.

Yes they do need filters. Their gills take in the oxygen from the water sort of like our lungs....you wouldnt last long in a dirty atmosphere would you? youd get sick and die too. I know you are sort of thinking about fish in the river etc. But they are in fresh running water with lots of oxygen. Make sure you put in some pond plants as well
