When they escape they're very hard to catch. They're quick and they love trees. I had two iquana's, the biggest one was 5 foot 11in. And that is true about them being a herbivore by nature. It is easier to survive, they don't have to hunt.

Where do you find lots of abandoned iguanas? And what size are they? Remember, alligators, crocodiles, monitor lizards, etc, are NOT large iguanas, they are different species. The largest a standard iguana can get is about 1.5 meters counting the tail, although marine iguanas may get bigger.
I suspect the reason iguanas have an easier time in the wild than most pet lizards is because they are one of the few kinds of lizards that eats plants; most of the others are carnivores, so if they were released they probably wouldn't last very long in the wild.

Because stupid moms buy their 10-12 year old w/o doing any research on them beforehand and when they break 3 feet long mommy doesn't want it in her house anymore because the caging for them requires a lot of room. And they eat their greens like a growing boy should. They get up to 1.5 to 2 meters long, depending on the sex. Stupid moms are also the reason for abandoned burmese and reticulated pythons also. Their cute when they are babies but when they break 10 feet they cant have them anymore.

Healthy iguanas get really, really big and very hard to properly care for.
It is kind of sad- these are great animals, but an awful lot of people get them when they are young and 'cute' and are not prepared for the 'monsters' they become.

their abandoned most the time because some kid wanted it and lost attention and caring of it . And iguanas are aggressive too which scares people so they abandoned them. They grow big with proper heat, greens vegetables fruits and calcium my igs are pretty big.
