I can't believe all these people told you that pi (the greek letter pi) is used to stand for a number that is approximately 3.14 (like the guy that gave the number to about a zillion decimal places) but nobody said what pi is! Yeah, it is one of those numbers that keeps on going and going and never gets to an exact answer -- but for normal purposes 3.14 is good enough. But what is it? Where did the 3.14 come from? Pi is a number that is really a ratio. It is a comparison of two things... the distance around a circle (circumference) compared to the distance through the circle (diameter). So if you know how far it is through the middle of a circle, you can multiply that distance times 3.14 and it tells you the distance around it. Or say you know the distance around something (like 25,000 miles around the Earth) then you could divide that by 3.14 and it would tell you how far it is through the middle.

It depends on how many remainder digits your prepared to use. Pi (to give it it's real name) is an infinite number which represents the ratio of a circle's circumferance to it's diameter. Generally it's accepted that going to anything beyond three of four digits won't change the outcome of a sum extensively (unless of course it's for something precise, like engineering or rocket science). 3.14 is acceptible, but 3.142 may also be used (rounding up), as is most commonly suggest that this number be used in classrooms etc.

Yes, the circumference of an apple pie (actually it doesn't matter what kind of pie it is) is pretty close to 3.14 times the diameter. If we assume the pie is a perfect mathematical circle, then the circumference is exactly pi times the diameter, where pi = 3.14159265...

you can calculate it to as many decimal points as you have time or talent and you won't have it exactly
computers have calculated pi to hundreds of decimal points but from high school I remember it as far as 3.14159265359
