If so, what does it involve?

An OB/GYN can examine a girl's vagina and determine the following:
-If the hymen is intact, has been torn, or is absent [this thin membrane can tear from causes other than sexual intercourse; some girls are born without a hymen, so its absence is in no way proof-positive that the girl has had sex].
-If there is evidence of recent sexual activity [such as vaginal abrasions, lacerations, hematomas; tears in the vaginal membrane {this occurs mostly in cases of forcible penetration or sexual assault}, or presence of semen in the vagina].
-If the cervix [opening of the uterus] is distended or torn, indicating a recent abortion/miscarriage, or birth/stillbirth.

To perform this kind of exam, the girl is told to remove all of her clothing from the waist down; she's then placed lying on her back on an examination table with her knees bent and her legs up in stirrups. The doctor will first visually inspect the outer vulvar area, the vaginal opening and its surroundings. Then the doctor will proceed to insert a well lubricated double-bladed instrument called an speculum into the vagina to spread it open so he/she can look inside and visualize the internal vaginal canal and the cervix of the uterus; if appropriate, samples for a PAP smear or to determine the presence of male ejaculate [in cases of suspected sexual assault] are collected, labeled and sent to a Pathologist for further evaluation. The speculum is then removed, and the doctor will gently insert his/her gloved index and middle finger[s] into the vagina to palpate the uterus, cervix and ovaries for the presence of cysts, masses, or signs of pregnancy. During the exam, an assistant such as a female nurse will be present in the room; also, if the patient requests it, a relative such as her mother, sister, friend, husband or boyfriend can be present, too. This kind of exam is done only if the patient is willing and consents to it voluntarily; the only exception are in cases of minors where sexual abuse is alleged or suspected.

yes, the doctor will stretch the vagina and look i the hymen is broken. usually a doctor wouldn't do that, but looking into the vagina is an integral part of any gynaecological check up, so next time you go for your smear your doctor will see if you're still a virgin or not. btw - don't let that keep you, it's very important to have yoursel examined regularly and the doctor is not allowed to tell anyone about what he sees.

A gynecologic exam can determine if the hymen is intact in which case the subject is a virgin. If the hymen is torn it does not mean that the tear occurred during intercourse.

The only way a doctor can find out you are sexually active is if they find signs of it "down there" (that doesn't include your hymen being broken), or if you tell him. The doctor does NOT have the right to tell your parents, even if you are a minor, you still have doctor-patient confidentiality.

Yes. By simply looking into the vagina to see if the hymen has been torn. Of course, this membrane can get torn from various things, besides sex.

All they would do is look for 'strech marks' inside of the vigina, and they would check to see if they hymen is still intact.
