You don't need to do anything additional if you have yahoo account. As you know it is free and you can create from www.yahoo.com or from your regional yahoo site.
Download yahoo messenger from yahoo site and use your yahoo id and password.
Then you can add your friends email address to chat or choose from chat group or search from the search option

Just go to yahoo.com and look under messenger, they will ask you if you want to download it and which one you want.
