Through human evolution, communication is one of the traits which helped mankind evolve to what he is today. All animals have some form of communication, oral or otherwise.
Humans communication became more complex as they started to inform each other to different things. For example:
Ug! Could mean yes. Then Nah! could mean no. As time went by the humans started creating different sounds for different things. Until we have the complexities of all the different languages today.

Although many words and much language evolved over time, other words are coined everyday. You can make up one and see if it catches on. Before the invention of the telephone, there was no word for telephone. Also, word meanings evolve. Before the invention of computers, a computer was a person who did mathematical computations. If you're caveman (or woman) Zog, and you nomadically travel to a land where there are wooly mammoths, and there were no wooly mammoths where you came from, you might turn to your friend Og and say, "Hey, lets call those big hairy beasts with the long noses...um...Oh, I don't know...how about 'Snargwhompers'?" And Og might say, "No, they look more like 'Larrys' to me."

Depends if you believe in evolution or creation. If we evolved from apes then I have no idea. If God created Adam and Eve, God gave the language of Aramaic. At the tower of Babel, God was angry at the people for trying to build a tower tall enough to reach Heaven that He gave them different tongues. Every person there began to speak in a different language and couldn't understand each other. So they fought and were unable to continue building together. They separated and moved away and lived in different lands. From that situation we know Hebrew came to be, then Latin, then Roman (this is the alphabet we use today but 4 letter were added to the original Roman alphabet).

Words were created as a way for humans to interact with each other. As humans evolved from apes, so did their grunts evolve into speech. They didn't really 'come from' anywhere. They developed.
