The average A19 standard bulb life is about 2000 hrs. Things like being shaken when shipped or if they are in a fixture where the heat builds up (recessed can) will reduce the life span. If you have them on a dimmer you can double the life if only dimmed 10%. I had 1 bulb last 6 1/2 years because of a dimmer (it was always set low). Look on the box it'll tell you the average life hrs. If you want long life bulbs look for 130 volt bulbs. The filaments are a little stronger.

Sofix's wed link doesn't really tell you the life span of a bulb it's just a bunch of egg heads dealing with calculations between 110v and 220v.
Backhome is on the money. I've worked in a lighting studio for years. 2000 hrs is average on most wattage's of a standard bulb.

The previous answerers were right about looking at the box. But compact flourescents last for YEARS. I have some I bought 6-7 years ago that are on a lot, and they are still going strong. I had one burn out after 10+ years. Sunbeam is a good brand (but there are others just as good, mostly brand names you'd recognise) - the really cheap ones have a strange looking bluish tinge to them.

It depends on the voltage of the bulb. Here's a lnk that explains (if somewhat technical)
http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/eng99/eng99336.htm
excerpt:
The light output and lifetime of lamp filaments is known pretty accurately as a function of voltage. Briefly: the amount of light that a bulb produces goes as the 3.5 power of the voltage ratio. The lifetime goes as the inverse twelfth power of the voltage ratio. This is for a normal lightbulb. Also, the current goes as the 0.55 power of the voltage ratio.Voltage ratio is the applied voltage divided by the rated voltage.
Hope this helps!

It should say on the box how many hours each bulb is good for.
