OK, Now this will all not be saved unless you do this.
3. In the menu, select Tools -> Folder Options.
4. Select the View tab.

I don't understand what you're talking about. You say you're using explorer, but then say you can't because you have a Mac? Are you talking about Mac OS, or Media Access Control? That doesn't make any sense. Are you talking about Window's Explorer, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or the Finder? Not to mention, you're asking for exact instructions, so if that's what you want, then go to help within the program and get the exact instructions. Why would you ask something on here, expecting exact instructions? Yahoo Answers is all about opinions and different ways of doing things.
If you're on a Mac and you're talking about Microsoft's Internet Explorer, use Safari or Firefox, because as of the beginning of '06, Microsoft has fully stopped support on IE and is not even available as a download anymore.
If you're talking about the Finder go to the Help menu and ask your question there since you're looking for exact instructions. If you're willing to accept an opinion, activate Finder, navigate to the menu bar, and select View > Show View Options. The pallette will change according to what window is active. Also, you can go to Finder > Preferences, and change some things about the Finder.

Really I don't know what do you want to change the explorer view and I don't know which version of windows you are using. I am giving the procedure for Windows explorer for Windows XP
1) Open Windows Explorer by pressing Windows key + E or through menu or by clicking the icon 'My computer' from desktop
2) Select the menu Tools==> Option from Exporer. You will get one pop up window which has three tab and different options. You can change whatever you want from there.
Post in detail if you have any specific requirement
