I'm looking for a car, and when I search for one I would like to know what it is called when the shift is by the wheel instead of the bottom by,like a cupholder.

the terms automatic on the column ,,are used or three speed on the column,,,or automatic in the floor,,or automatic on the column,,these are the most widely used terms for it,,good luck with it.

Shift by the wheel is an Automatic and the one you have to manually shift on the floor is a Standard.

Well in the olden days when we limited to just three and four speed transmissions you would have "three on the tree" which was a column mounted three speed and "four on the floor" which was a floor mounted four speed. Both had quite a long term for manufacture. I think the three speed on the column ended somewhere in the early eighties and the four speed shortly after that. If anyone has specfic dates then by all means add them to your entry.

A colum shifter no matter what they are still standards both of them floor or on the steering wheel lol

A column shifter. The other is a floor shifter.
