1-A statement that explains the meaning of a word or a phrase .
e.g.what is the definition of "mood".
2-A description of the features and limits of something .
e.g.The legal definition of the word is very unsatisfactory .
3-Definition "noun" :how clear an image or sound is .
e.g. The photograph rather lacks definition .

According to Webster Dictionary, definition 1:an act of determining or settling 2:a statement of the meaning of a word or word group, also: the action or process of defining 3: the action or the power of making definite and clear: clarity, distinctness

I'd like to know who wrote the first dictionary and how did he or they do it.

To define anything is to set out exactly the structure of the object.you explain precisely what you mean you give the sense of what it is you are trying to say. For example if you were asked to define what money is you might say "Money is any form which is accepted as exchange for something else.It can be in coin of the realm or in another less sophisticated society shells or salt or whatever is accepted as a means of transfer of something from one person to another. "That is an example of defining money.The same exactness is needed to define anything.
