IF someone were to hurt you in a violent way, why should I not defend myself and attack back. Especially if it is a drunk 30 year old man who is a racist.

Why would you want to hurt him? AND why would or did he want to hurt you??
Do you know? Did you do something to "hurt" him first?

Even a drunk and racist does not go around hurting other people without a reason. Was it the result of an "argument"? Something you said? Well, I don't know the whole story.

However, if you did something to offend him, why not apologize for the offense? It may have stopped the incidence right there.

On the other hand, if you think you were right in offending (hurt) him first then, according to your reasoning, and that of the majority of people (see the other answers here) he has the right to defend himself, no? It's called "justified" retaliation.

So you see, it's not that simple! I guess we all know "our rights". But do we know our obligations?

When will we learn what has been thaught by many "teachers" in many "religions" through the ages, that to think and act with compassion and forgiveness toward the "other" is the ideal rule for living in peace?

Violence IS NOT the answer.

Love is the answer - whatever the question.

I hate it when people say things like "violence never solves anything." The fact is that naked force has resolved more conflicts in the history of the world than any other method.

I wonder what the community leaders of the city of Troy would say if someone told them that violence never solves anything? Probably not much, since the city was destroyed.

If someone is behaving in a belligerent way and inciting you to use violence, go ahead and use it. I bet they won't behave that way towards you again. Problem solved.

Because it makes you no better than them. If someone verbally assults you ignore it especially if they are drunk. If it continues it is harrassment, get a restraining order, then if it continues they go to jail If someone is beating the crap out of you, then yes defend yourself, but if you beat him so badly that you go to jail, what did that solve, you are punished for something that you did not start. So defend yourself within reason and within the limits of the law, the aggressor will get his just reward.

Defend yes, but do not attack back, because your behaviour is as bad as that person if you do. Two wrongs do not make a right!

God would prefer us to leave judgement to the police that is if you can trust them. Violence in our hands is not the best course always.

Well in your case, duh, fight back only if it's to protect yourself! Then get the police involved! NOONE has the right to hurt you and YOU have no right to seek to hurt anyone.
But if a 3 yr old hits you in the jewels, well that's not cool! See, then you have to seek inner peace!
