Much of the English language is from the old French, which in turn was from Latin. So, goale is 13c French, now adapted to gaol. The yanks brough jail into the equation, both mean the same. OK

Gaol is gaol in the UK. In the USA it's called jail or Guantanamo, depending on your ethnicity.

Ye olde English words have been replaced my more modern interpretations of the same. Back in the olden days words were spelled as they sounded, such as gaol because it was simpler and more economic!

the american 'jail' became more popular over time. It also sounds the way it looks...now look at gaol lol! the trick is to stay out of it

I think that this is likely due to the adoption of the American spelling.
The English language is spoken over a very wide area, and non- UK originated words can very easily find themselves adopted in the UK, not least due to the broadcasting of foreign (but English language) programmes on TV and Radio.

Gaol is still used at times but mainly Ireland.
