As a matter of fact a race is a subset of species. We do differentiate between "races" of specific animals, but rather than use the species name and call it that, we will give that specific animal it's own name. For example, African Elephant is a race of elephant. The key question to telling whether they are the same species or not is whether they can breed and produce viable offspring. If the answer is yes, then they are the same species. Also with livestock, we tend to refer to races as "breeds" because they've been carefully molded to have the charectaristics that make them unique.

All humans are the same species. Genetically speaking, you and I, even thought we have never even met, are more similar than, say, a 2 sibling dogs. So, like all animals are classified by name (think about how many different types of birds) we have races. However, those different types of birds are more genetically dissimilar than a Caucasian is with an African).

I guess you could look at it as being the same thing, just a different term. :P

Humans are one species because we can interbreed between the races without extraordinary measures, and our "hybrid" offspring are fertile. The human species actually has an oddly low amount of genetic variability. Australian aborigines, separated from the rest of humanity for abour 40,000 years, are fully human too.

Other species have races too, but instead of calling them races, we call them "breeds" or "varieties."

Humans are only categorized as different races by the members of the KKK and neo-Nazis. Biologists and Anthropologists don't recognize those "categories"...only the species Homo Sapien.

Because species can not often inter-breed, at least not without sterile offspring, despite some racists and bigots perceptions, all humans, whatever race, should be able to have viable and potent offspring.
