Your answer should be D although B is also of significance.

During Medieval times the craftsman/artist was seen as quite low on the social scale. The church were their largest patrons and Gothic art prevailed. Paintings lacked depth and perspective.

During the Renaissance period the artist climbed the social scale and their guilds were powerful. The guilds along with the church and the wealthy merchant classes became patrons of the arts. The classical world was revisited in art and Humanism was born.Linear perspective was discovered and paintings now had depth.

None of the above. A craftsman would be a carpenter, a stonemason, or a roof thatcher.

Whereas an artist is a portrait painter, a statue sculpture, an architect.

My grandfather was a carpeter, a master craftsman in wood. He made delicate inlaid dressers and chests. But someone else, the artist designed them.

I would have to say that i think both B and D are likely answers to you question. During the Renaissance artists pulled away from church themed projects to do things that had to do more with the human body, which before that been viewed with distaste from the Catholic Church. I believe the Renaissance had alot to do with pulling away from the chruch.
