It was called 'Survivors' , it was on the BBC and it was very, very good. No big mega budgets but just good solid stories exploring how those left behind would cope with the collapse of civilisation. I don't know how it would stand up to viewing now, but it certainly worked then.

Survivors, I think.
The opening sequence showed a lab worker breaking a beaker, then at an airport, getting off a plane , then falling over ill.
Watching Doomwatch, Threads and survivors, as a kid, I never thought I'd make it to my 40's :-)
ah well, we survived all that, i daresay we will survive having a mental incompetant as head of the USA and his pet monkey as Prime Minister of the UK
