The best leadership skill is to be able to lead without appearing to lead, ie, letting somebody think that they are the leader, when, in fact, they are following your suggestions and idea..
second, a guiding style is better than being pushy... being pushy, or bossy is bound to cause more problems..
However, you also have to know when it's good to just outright take charge and get the people who need to be led, behind you in what you are doing.

look around you for leaders that you like.
They could be teachers, coaches or even family members.
What qualities to they have that you like? Copy those habits.
Go to the library and look up some books on developing leadership skills.

First and foremost, to be a good listener. That way you can identify what the person needs and help them to find solutions.
To be a leader, you need to be active and doing what you want others to do. Nobody follows a dormant leader.
To always be solution oriented. To always dwell on the positive.
To always look foreward. It doesn't matter how a problem started, what matters is how to solve it.
To be upbeat, pleasant and helpful at all times.
These have always worked for me and help me keep my business running like a well-oiled machine.

You have to be able to see something through the eyes of your followers and be able to explain "what's in it for them".
You have to show them that you're not asking them to do anything you wouldn't do yourself. Alexander The Great was good for this. He slept, ate, and fought alongside his soldiers. He even dressed like them. He's one of my favorite leaders in history.
