Prozac and other anti-depressants that are SSRI's can be very effective. They do take several weeks to get into your system, and this is why some people say they do not work, because they don't give them long enough

SSRI's (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors) allow seratonin to be utilized more effectively in the brain.

However, I would always advise having counselling as well as taking anti-depressants when treating depression.

the active ingredient of prozac is fluoxetine. though i dont know anything about prozac as such, i take fluoxetine tablets every day as an antidepressant and i can tell you that in the first 3 weeks that i took them, my depression got much worse, i had insomnia and various other minor side effects. However, that was 3 months ago and since then i have been feeling wonderful except for a sort period when the dose i was taking stopped being effective and i had my prescription doubled.

It is also not addictive which was a great relief to me.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask me.

I have been taking them for ten years now with no side effects. I was first prescribed them for depression and also pmt along the way. I feel they keep me going in life, without them after a three week period I feel awful. On resuming the course they only take a week to get back into my system and make me feel stable again and content. They are a non addictive drug so dont worry you will get hooked on them. I rely on mine to keep my chemical balance as I also suffer with an under active thyroid.

Fluoxentine is Prozac. Its just different manufacturers of the same drug.

PROZAC is a very useful tool. I have been on it for years, and most likely be on a maintenance dosage the rest of my life. My words of caution: It must be prescribed by a trusted Physiopharmacologist, you must be monitored by a therapist. Take your significant other(s) with you to get a briefing on the changes you wil be going through, and what to watch for. Prozac can intensify feelings of suicide.

Be patient it takes time 3-5 weeks to begin working.

Good Luck

PROZAC = used for a preparation of fluoxetine (an antidepressant drug C17H18F3NO that is administered in the form of its hydrochloride and enhances serotonin activity)

Well I was offered Prozac, it is supposed to take about a month to get into your system.
I probably didnt give them a chance but they didnt work for me.
That isnt a problem though speak to your doctor, (something i didnt do) and get something else if they dont work for you.
Good luck

Definatley serve a purpose and earn their name of "happy pills". I believe they help but should be used in conjunction with some kind of counselling.

Completely AGAINST it!

depression can be cured with vitamins and exercises.
p.s. Tom C. is right.

I known a man in his early 50's that committed suicide after using depression meds.
