the benefits include more economic efficiency by having no trade barriers (quotas, tariffs, etc.) and a single market with a single currency, somewhat strong political alliance (assurance of no wars on european continent, though obvious differences in foreign policy), and similar policies on the environment, consumer protection, etc.
the eu is not a country yet. there are european institutions that make eu law for the european good, but in some areas, individual countries negotiate to make eu law to favor their individual policies. also, there isn't really a european army, which is essential to a country.

It's a bad thing. It brings the world one step closer to a global government. Everyone can sing the praises of globalism as much as they want but if it ever happens, America will be screwed.
