They say turtles live for a really long time. Is that true?

The oldest tortoise with decent age records (which are usually very weak) was about 175-250.

Tortoises often break 100, but most other turtles more commonly live to about 50 in the wild- although there certainly are exceptions like the 100 year old box turtle in New York.

In captivity, sadly, many pet turtles rarely live 5 years.

Turtles and tortoises don’t use up much energy, so most of the energy in their food goes to making new cells. This means that not only do turtles keep growing throughout their lives, but also it means they are constantly making new cells to replace old, worn out cells.

In humans, the heart, liver, kidneys and other organs necessary for life, grow older and become less efficient. However, because tortoises and turtles make new cells, their organs do not wear out like human organs. This is why they live much longer on average than people do.

It depends on the species. In general, the smaller, the shorter-lived. Alligator snapping turtles can live to be over two hundred, but your average box turtle will probably live for two or three decades.

Honestly it really depends on the type of turtle. However, it is easy to assume that most turtles live to a ripe old age of one hundred, plus.

they say Galapagos turtles live to 150, and several years ago I read that they were trapping snapping turtles in the Louisiana bayous with Civil War musket balls embedded in their shells. That would make them very old.
