Anti-semitism was a world-wide phenomenon at the time.

Let's not forget that Hitler got many of his ideas from a bad forgery called "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," which was printed and heavily promoted by our own Henry Ford.

Let's also not forget that there was a strong Fascist movement within the U.S. prior to WW2, with a lot of people believing that because of the unique threats to our security, we needed a president who could ignore basic laws (sound familiar?).

Finally, let's not forget that Hitler didn't seize control - it was willingly handed to him by people we believed that loyalty to a person or a party was more important than loyalty to a nation's ideals.

He considered anyone not white/blonde/blue-eyed to be subhuman. However, I suspect he went after the Jews because they presented such an easy target. Aside from the fact that they are blamed for killing Jesus, Communism was around at the time and frightening everybody. The "creator" of Communism was Jewish (Karl Marx) and the one who incited the revolution in Russia (Vladimir Ilyech Lenin) also was Jewish. Basically Hitler said the Jews were trying to take over the world using economic means, and since everyone was afraid of that (and just hated Jews themselves anyway), everybody jumped on the bandwagon.

He was obsessed. Hilter believed in Nationalism, which is basically a profound love and dedication to your country and race. A lot of people feel this kind of pride (take for example American patriotism) the difference is, because Hitler was a sociopath he took it much further than simple love of country. He believed in Germans for Germany. Then he took it one step further, believing that he owed a debt to God. The Jews killed Christ (in his opinion) and deserved to be punished.
If you can stomach it, read Mein Kampf. It is a book written in Hitler's own words..sort of a diary. It gives tremendous insight to the person he was, and how twisted and obsessed his mind became.

Because he had absolute power. And absolute power corrupts absolutely. And because people let him. He wrote down and told the world what his plans were in Mein Kampt but people thought that he was just kidding or making metaphors. Its up to the people to police their governments. Remember Hitler was elected to power. He also killed gays, Communists, catholics, Gypsies, the mentally retarded and anyone who was socially unfit. Meaning those people who spoke out against him.

I believe he used the one thing that gathers people, and people go to war over; religion. Hitler needed something to get his claws into the people. He chose the Anti-Semitic bandwagon.

His disdain for Jews began with a Jewish doctor that he believed contributed to his mothers death, but I think the insanity was caused by the massive doses of amphetamines his doctor was giving him by injection.
