Think Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, X-Men. Sounds like adventure/sci-fi is doing quite well at the box office.

If you speak globally then it probably, after a little mathematical deduction, Hong Kong martial arts or Bollywood musical films. Though these genres wouldn't reap the greatest overall profits, for a genre as a whole, they probably outnumber any one American film genre. This is not certain because Sci-Fi action films from the US probable make the highest gross profit even for their relatively small percentage of all films.

If you speak merely of popularity as it might be rated in an objective poll that ignores box-office receipts, then it is probably quite close between action and romance (or drama).

I would say comedy or horror, since most the movies made fall in that category.
