I believe self defense, self preservation whatever you want to call it is ingrained in our basic instinct to survive. If you're talking about preemptive war for control, power, money, religion or whatever reason I don't believe that's human nature. That's a cop out. Not ALL humans feel the need to dominate or control other people.

War will always be with us as long as there are 2 or more nations. Control is the issue. When you have war, you will always have violence. Self defense. When you have war, you will always have self defense as one nation is the aggressor and one is the defender.

Yes, yes, and yes. We are rational and destructive at the same time. Every one of us. We are all capable of being a saint AND an attendant at the gas chamber. Unfortunately, that is human nature. The self defense that you mentioned is quite different than war and violence. Additional note: Psychological tests have clearly shown that humans will obey authority and continually shock another test patient if they are told to. Even the most conscientious and ethical humans will obey authority and do the wrong thing.

Archaeology suggests that it is an extremely ancient part of our history, and anthropology teaches that it is found in some form in every place we inhabit. There are variations, such as warfare primarily within the group or primarily with outsiders, but warfare is as constant as hunger, disease, and death itself.

Define "human nature". If you mean genetics, or some innate quality, the answer is no. War is a higher function, man-made mistake in social behavior and could easily be extinct if we chose to do so.

Yes, the sad truth is that at some deep inner level of our psyche we want war. It is possible to get past it though.

Yep, it is buried in the reptilian cortex, and is wired into the terratorialism of the human animal and triggered once resources are perceived to be diminished.
