My husband and I have drove my friend and his wife for years cause they did not have a car. So any camping trips, parties and so on we drove, (including being the designated driver) for about 5 years. Now they have a car, and still want us to drive them around. Any suggestions, we would like a break(PS: they never paid, or offered to pay for gas or just general car maintenance, or even help to wash after 4x4 trips, should we?)

Wow, it is really hard when We have People in Our lives that are Friends, but some how manage to take advantage of us. I have a Friend that never has money, so I know how You feel. She does however, as I am sure Your Friends do, have money for what They want, and need.

Tell Them that with the price of gas, that it is no longer cost effective to pick Them up and drop Them off. You hope that They will understand. If They are true Friends, They will still be Your Friends, and if They take offense, then They weren't so True.

I hope that this works out for You. You have done so much for Them, and I know that it is troubling You, to come on Here and ask for advice. Just know that You are good People, and that You have done all that You can. It might be easier to say We don't have time, We have something else to do before We arrive, but You really want to nip this in the bud, so to speak.

God Bless and Best Wishes

Well you could bring up the subject in perhaps a light-hearted way. You could say something like "it's great you've got transport now, we could come in with you and have a break from driving." Then see what reaction you get. If they are true friends then they'll behave in the best way and offer to do what you've been doing for years. Plan what to say in advance and it'll go well.

i would just be up front with them i mean they are your friends i'm sure they would understand! just say something like
Hey i don't want to drive your turn and just throw it on them!
or make a game out of it and say
Shot gun not driving!
and have your husband do the samething!
or just state that it is a problem between yourfriend ship and you wish they would step up and drive some too! ask them why they haven't offerd or ask them the same qustion you did here!
I mean if they would throw away a friend ship over who is driving then i don't htink i would want to be friends with them!
Good luck!

maybe you should talk to them about this. it isn't fair that you have to all this... it should be a give and take relationship not you doing all the giving and them all the taking.
