I own a house and can rent it out for $2000.00/month and I told my mom that I would rent it to her for 1000.00, she receives social security and a pension $2500 a month, is this fair?

I don't believe in making loans to family or friends. It only causes resentment and problems. If I'm going to give family money, it's a gift I don't expect back. If I get some or all of it back, but if not, I wasn't counting on it, so it's no sweat to me. I guess I feel the same about renting a house to family. It's probably fair to ask her to help you out in return, or to ask her to pay the taxes on it for you, but I wouldn't charge her rent. If you've rented the property in the past or if you have other rental property, you might be able to use it as a tax deduction. I have a friend whose father-in-law not only makes him make payments on his wife's car and the money he lent him to bail out his daughter, but also charges him compounded interest. That's definately wrong in my opinion. Might as well go to the bank for that.

Making your mom pay rent?!? Why?!??!?! After all those years her giving you a place to live for free and putting food in your mouth and doing your laundry for free??? Geeze I couldn't do that to my mother taking care of me all those years and feeding me that's low I don't think it's right to do that she didn't charge you rent.......

Yes, its fair if she can afford it. I do the same thing but my mother is touche' about calling it rent, so we refer to it as room and board.

yes because you have property taxes that you have to pay for. You don't want her to get to comfortable with not paying for nothing.
