how can i get an accurate appraisal on my japanese china my father brought home FROM japan post-ww2?

I'm an antique collector here in Japan so I will try and help.

It really depends on what your father bought?

A. is it a set of dishes or a variety of different plates/bowls etc.?

B. are there any markings on the bottoms?

C. Did they come with individual boxes? Do those boxes have markings?

Right off, I would be skeptical that it would be worth much. Most of post ww2 stuff wasnt well made since Japan was in ruins.

If however he picked it up at an antique store.....it might be worth something.

If your not in Japan, you need to do a bit of homework in order to find out what they might be worth.

First off, figure out if its a set or not. Then is it china or pottery?

If its pottery, you should look up the various styles of japanese pottery on the web and see if you can identify what type yours is. Then check ebay.

I'd also try various Japanese antique shops on the west coast. Offer to sell what you have by sending a picture. You dont have to reveal that you dont know what its worth.
