UNTIL 1370 YEARS BEFORE IN HINDU RELIGION IT WAS NECESSARY TO A WIFE TO BURNT HER SELF ALIVE WITH THE DEAD BODY OF HER HUSBAND. BUT NOW THIS THING U CAN NOT FIND ANY WHERE IN WORLD. LITERALLY SATI MEANS PIOUS WOMAN.

This answer is from an indian, hindu by birth. The spelling is "sati". It was one of the dark side of hinduism ... but, I reckon all religions have had some dark aspect (e.g., "Inquisition" of Christianity, check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisitions).

Old habits (especially when the average person unquestioningly accepts what so-called elders or village community proclaim as truth) are difficult to eliminate. So, superstitious practices still abound all over the world. I could make this answer into a blog, so stopping here :-)
