EU is suing Apple for making iPod that does not compatible with other music format files, which gave almost total advantages to Apple to monopolize the music market.

This is unrelated, but I heard if you're going to download songs from iTunes, Napster, or any other online paid music service, there's certain compatibility issues. I would look into that, if I used one of those online music services, to see if the player could hold my songs. All songs you rip from cds, or download from LimeWire will work, because they don't have licenses on them.
iPod just gained a lot in the market, because of advertising, and popularity. There are many other brands out there that can compete with the iPod now. Even the smallest iPod Shuffle, still has 500MB of memory -- almost all iPods carry at least 1GB of memory; you'll see a lot of mp3 players on the market only carrying 256MB, sometimes. iPod tries to make quality goods.
It's hard to say if everyone else is copying off of iPod. They put a lot of research into the mp3 player, and made a lot of innovations. Brands like Creative, though, have comparable products; sometimes the Creative products are priced $10-25 less than a similar iPod product, to win over consumers.
There are lots of mp3 players on the market, and you can find the right one for you. There are some cheap mp3 players out there though, that might have issues. There's always some bad apples. Since it can be a big investment, I suggest you do some research on the internet, before buying one. Cnet has reviews of almost every mp3 player.

The only advantage is you can play iTunes music store music on them. On my Palm, that's the only media it can't play. I have a trick to make it work on other MP3 players.
On Windows: Burn CDs (Or reuse a CDRW) of your songs in iTunes, then rip the cds into your media player (like WIndows Media Player)
On a Mac: Open iMovie and put a song in the audio track of a blank movie. Then, export the sound and put the music in your media player. Repeat this until you have done all your songs.
I think it's dumb of apple to do that. I mean, if it's "piracy protection", you can use a tape recorder hitched up to the iPod to copy music, so it's nothing but a scam to force you to buy iPods.
My Palm can do all that an iPod can do (but play that not-so-true "piracy protected" music) and more... The only drawback is their low memory capacity.

Because Apple wanted to make their own MP3 player, which had a bigger memory and looked more stylish. To appeal to the aged 16-30 catagory who are upto-date with all the new technology.
IPods have a bigger memory and a longer battery life. That is why you should choose one over a normal 40 song mp3 player

My friend has one and says she thinks the best is the Zen Creative because iPods, some of them, don't last very long. And also, soemtimes the battery can get damaged or something else happens to it. But with a Zen, it's got a lot of things and cost about the same as a iPod even though it's not as popular as iPods.

In my opinion on of the best music programs is itunes and an ipod is SOOOO much easier to use than regular mp3 players with Itunes. Also..they make everything FOR an ipod...like cases, programs, games, and other things. Ipods are the best I would HIGHLY recommend them!

I say go with a Creative Zen. Either the Zen micro photo or the Zen Vision. You get way more memory for your money with those. They sound better too. They also have a much longer battery life and more colors which equals better quality picture. One more thing, If you have a Windows computer, the Zen is way easier to put songs on. It also detects it quicker and you don't have to have everything how you want it on iTunes for it to be that way on the Zen. You can edit on the other Zen also.

If you get an IPOD, you're paying for luxury, not features. IPODS look good, they run smoothly, and you're not going to have any problems with one unless you break it. But they're very expensive. If you want to listen to music and you don't really want an IPOD, just go with another MP3 player and save a dollar.

iPods are really easy to use. Other MP3 players are better in terms of memory, speed, etc., but they don't advertise their products. I have an iPod, but wish I had a Zen Micro or something.
