most people are entirely self-interested. When you fall into the realm of their own self-interest the will be "nice." If you don't fit into their self-interest then you are unimportant and will be treated as nothing, and they will likely act "mean"

I think it depends on the situation.
Overall I think that the lean a little bit more toward the mean side (at least in the USA).
I think that people are nice when it doesn't inconvenience them at all.
There are a some people that are nice even to others that are cruel to them. But there are a lot of people that are cruel to people that are kind to them.
Most of the people I work with are on the nice side, but throughout my life, I'd say that about 60% of people are mean. I'd also say that if it came between their own interests and your interests, about 80% of people choose their own interests. It's rather depressing actually.

I think that there are very few really nice people in the world.
There are also lots of wolves in sheep skin, people who do nice things because they have their own hidden agenda.
Mean people simply are because they are not happy about how things are and that they'd prefer the world spin around themselves.
So yes the most people in the world are mean.

Most people are both--it's just a matter of what kind of day they're having. And maybe some people are always mean, because all of their days are bad.
But on the whole, I find people to be friendly enough when I look them in the eye and smile. On the road is another story.

I live in a small town and most people here are nice people. We do have some who are mean and hateful but I believe most people are good.

I think most people are mean because all the more reason not to appear so. They may put on an act but behind your back something else is brewing.

The vast majority of people are very nice...there's always going to be a bad apple somewhere to mess things up. That's just life.

Most of the people I know are nice. But then you don't know what they are really like. So I don't know.
