It's called Freedom. Liberty. You remember. This country was founded on it.

Sure, some people have a real problem with alcohol, and they create real problems for other people when they get out of control. But we don't ban a substance just because some people don't use it wisely. Why if we did that, then way too many things would be illegal. Some people are no good at all, and they will use just about anything to cause trouble. Can we ban all sharp knives, even from the kitchens and surgeries where they are being used appropriately? Of course not. In the same way, we cannot ban alcohol, even from the kitchens and hospitals where it is being used responsibly.

Social drinking, when not to the point of losing control of one's behavior, is a great lubricant in problem-solving of a great variety of types. When people can have a drink or two together, or a nice wine or beer with a meal, they can be friendlier and more patient in discussing their differences, and can generally be nicer people. Business, social activism, politics, diplomacy, all know how to use this friendlier atmosphere to get things done. Why penalize them just because some people make fools or trolls of themselves when they drink?

I don't know as I've ever met a recovering alcoholic who said it should be altogether banned. They merely say they cannot afford to drink it at all. Not that someone else who can control themselves is begrudged.

Usually the people that confront alcohol abuse are either A. Non-drinkers or B. Recovering alcoholics. These two types only make up part of our society. Everyone else either ignores the issues, or believes that they will not succumb to the disease. Alcohol abuse believe it or not has been linked on a genetic level. Some people are more prone to abuse substances than others. It is a difficult and troublsome disease that has cost many lives. Unfortunately we cannot determine who is prone and who is not. Prohibiton proved that taking away alcohol only opened up the door for other problems the biggest one being crime. It is the same problem we are faced today with the "War on Drugs". In the end it comes down to: 1. Alcohol is a big market, it generates dollars. 2. People that are able to control their drinking will never see any reason to have it taken from them, therefore providing #1. Better education about alcohol, and alcohol abuse prevention is needed in our communites and schools.
