This is actually a question that I already know the answer to. I know a lot of you will not admit to it, or actually might not realize that you do it. However we ALL do. I just want to see how many people will think about it and admit to it. So do you admit to stereotyping? Stereotyping may not mean that you are prejudice. Do you realize you apply labels to people?

I learned this in my studies in psychology. It didn’t turn over well with many of the students though. Primarily the act of stereotyping is a mostly unconscious process performed by the brain to quickly process social information. We have categories, generalizations, and labels we apply to people so that we can easily retrieve it when we need more information about a person than what they have told us. This goes for race, religion, gender. More positives are tied with white, and negatives are more commonly tied with black.

Repetitive information received by certain types of people will soon end up creating a group inside of our minds. We then assume that everyone will fit into that group until we find that our information was inaccurate. This only happens when the stereotypes are totally out of whack or untrue with a numerous amount of people. Other than that, we apply a temporary label until we find out more about the person. However, you most of the time will judge a book by its cover.

A more mainstream book based on the psychology of the unconscious mind is the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

I do all the time and so does eveyone else. When I was a waitress, I sterotyped. I said all ghetto people don't tip. I was usually right, because not many ghetto people tip when they go out to eat, at least the ones the I and my coworkers have waited on. I think people go on what they have experienced in life and that creates stereotypes. I do know that not all ghetto people are bad tippers, though, because I have gotten some generous tips from some. Very few, but they're out there.

Yes, I do put labels on people. Then I get after my husband for doing it. Ha ha. I know it is wrong, and then I feel really bad when I start thinking about it more.

You think it is logical thinking, but really, you could just be so wrong! If I see a guy that is really dirty, then I automatically thing he is a bum. Then it occurs to me AFTER I have put the label on them that, No maybe they were just working really hard. Maybe they have a dirty type of job.

If I know someone drinks alcohol I label them as an alcoholic. Again, I have to remind myself that just because the people I know ARE alcoholics, does not mean another person would be.

I admit that the first impression I have on people sometimes is not accurate, but it also has to do with the way that the person presents itself, because there must have been some clues that I interpreted in a certain way to make me categorize that person in the wrong group.

I do stereotype now and then. Even though it is not very nice, I do it.
