It is clear that if we keep on going the way we do we will destroy ourselves, someone put across the idea that population control would help reverse or decrease some of the negative effects we are having on our world.

But how do we decide who lives and who dies, and who becomes infirtile?

~ I do not believe in population control, but I was asking in reference to another question I saw in Yahoo answers.

However, it is obvious that the human population can not sustain itself and if one answer is to control population, how should it be done?

The best way for countries with population problems is to follow China, where their One-Child policy has now become law. Before they adopted this policy in 1979, I believe there was one baby being born every minute of every day there. This has now been brought under control and I guess its success is what prompted the Chinese government to make it law. (See the link below). It has improved the lives of the Chinese, but the downside is, who will look after all those pensioners who will eventually number over 100 million!! It's always a case of Ying and Yang and how to best achieve a balance is, I'm sure, going to be a headache for many governments.

Population pressure is really only a problem in less developed countries and probably the best way of achieving control is to EDUCATE THE WOMEN. In less developed countries where there is much poverty and disease, there is a natural tendency to reproduce as much as possible in the hope that at least one or two offspring will survive to adulthood to carry on the line. Medical advances have eliminated many of the diseases that tend to kill children, with the effect that most offspring survive at least long enough to reach sexual maturity, but the prevailing cultures in those countries have not yet adjusted to take account of this fact (except in China, as already noted). However, the cultural preference for male children in some areas is going to cause enormous problems.
Two things therefore would help: educate women so that they are not so dependent on men, and educate the men, especially in the need to plan their family. Safe, reliable contraception is a given (and enormous pressure must be brought to bear on cultures which obstruct this aim).
Secondly, the cultural preference for males in some societies must be tempered. (PS I am male and have no feminist agenda here; just plain common sense.)

well this will never happen but stopping all medical research and hence new discoveries would help. This would prevent the ageing population epidemic, as would lowering the quality of food we eat etc, but that is never going to happen. So perhaps euthenasia (however u spell that) is a good option (under certain conditions to ensure correct use) to help decrease the elderly population and those who are severly disabled/ill, and would rather not be contributing to the over population(to put it nicely).
one child policy (like in china) but this is hard to enforce etcetc.
perhaps better education into costs of having children may deter more people. however maybe as price of living is increasing and pay isnt going up at same rate -perhaps eventually too many children may prove to costly anyway.
Teen mothers need to be reduced by better education/more condoms and less grants/help being given to them imo.
in poorer countries (ledcs) condoms and education are the answer, as well as improving medication etc so people dont feel as though they have to have 'lots' of children in case a few die! to put it bluntly.just a few ideas could go on for days.

First of all, you need to make every inbred reject infertile so that they can not pollute the population with any more worthless welfare sucking idiots. Then you need to tell the catholics that using birth control is not a sin! In China there is a limit to the number of kids you can have. I think this is a good idea to implement here... Also, if you can not afford to have a child you shouldn't be allowed to... it is not the government's job to pay for your childs food, shelter and education... That is what the job of Parent is for.

"It is clear that if we keep on going the way we do we will destroy ourselves" No, population will control itself, there are limiting factors.

But the best way to control population would be to stop humanitarian aid. Don't sent food to the blacks because they're too lazy to farm it for themselves and produce kids that they can't support.

Another good way would be to let US schoolchildren carry guns for self defence.

Do a mandatory vasectomy at birth whilt the circumcision is being done, that way having children later on will have to be a conscious as well as a financial decision.
Walla... no more unwanted or unplanned births.

Third world countries are growing at an alarming rate, yet the western ones are starting to see their populations shrink.

Fix all the drug addicted and the abusers so they can't reproduce anymore also the homeless not to offend them but if they can't take care of them self then they don't need to have babies that end up in foster care or are addicted to drugs when they are born. And some how they need to find a fix not permanent for the teens who want some one to love them. No one has do die just need to be fixed.

stop giving extra benefits to people on social when they have more kids. if someone looses their job and needs financial help then, yes, they should be able to claim benefits. but if they decide never to work again so they can stay at home and have lots and lots of children then they shouldn't get any extra money. why should we pay for them to sit on their backsides and just reap the financial benefits. GET A JOB AND PAY YOUR OWN WAY IN LIFE!!!
